something i have read over and over finally made some sense
« on: February 18, 2015, 11:21:11 am »
I heard a radio preacher a little while back preaching on Luke 10:17-20
Now i have read this a few times and i was always puzzled because verse 18 didn't seem to fit in with what was going on, and almost seemed like some random even maybe abstract comment. But this preacher said that Jesus was warning them against getting heady and prideful about what they were doing, (v18) and to not lose sight of where this power came from, (v19) and what was really important! (v20B)
I thought that this makes sense, and thought i might share it with you all~

Who would have ever thought a forum on adv riding that causes me to get my bible out and look up scripture :D there is a lot we will never fully understand and even more that we think we know but really dont, that's what keeps us digging in for more.

emsreno fwiw... this is from the Matthew Henry commentary~

Whatever we have, the property of it is God's; we have only the use of it, according to the direction of our great Lord, and for his honour. This steward wasted his lord's goods. And we are all liable to the same charge; we have not made due improvement of what God has trusted us with. The steward cannot deny it; he must make up his accounts, and be gone. This may teach us that death will come, and deprive us of the opportunities we now have. The steward will make friends of his lord's debtors or tenants, by striking off a considerable part of their debt to his lord. The lord referred to in this parable commended not the fraud, but the policy of the steward. In that respect alone is it so noticed. Worldly men, in the choice of their object, are foolish; but in their activity, and perseverance, they are often wiser than believers. The unjust steward is not set before us as an example in cheating his master, or to justify any dishonesty, but to point out the careful ways of worldly men. It would be well if the children of light would learn wisdom from the men of the world, and would as earnestly pursue their better object. The true riches signify spiritual blessings; and if a man spends upon himself, or hoards up what God has trusted to him, as to outward things, what evidence can he have, that he is an heir of God through Christ? The riches of this world are deceitful and uncertain. Let us be convinced that those are truly rich, and very rich, who are rich in faith, and rich toward God, rich in Christ, in the promises; let us then lay up our treasure in heaven, and expect our portion from thence.

What I understand Luke 16:8-9 to be saying is that the dishonest manager gave away what belonged to his master to get in good with those people so he had a place to stay after he lost his job.  Here on earth, we are managers of God's wealth (whatever he gives us).  So while here on earth, it is God's desire that we give away a portion of our wealth, but not frivolously or without reason but shrewdly.  Just as the Dishonest Manager gave shrewdly to be of benefit, we should give of what God has entrusted us shrewdly.  So we need to find those that we can have the greatest impact on, those that are receptive to the Word and if we have a way to fulfill their needs or a blessing we can share or something they want, give to them shrewdly.  Don't give them all you have, the Dishonest Manager didn't give it all away, but he gave some away.  Enough it was meaningful.  So that's what I understand this confundity to be saying.
