I read your Alaska trip with Troy, Eric, Scott and Landon last night.  Sounded like a blast!  I remember the "excitement" you had hitting the gravel on the Dalton (I think) and how you stood on the rear brake to keep from going down.  Looking back, what are the biggest shortcomings you found with the Dl650 on that trip?  I noticed that you didn't have a skid plate, and that didn't seem to give you any grief.

By the way, of all the threads I've read on the Dalton, you are the first one to provide a good photo of the deep gravel on the road.

Before I say anything about the DL you have to realize that I am a huge fan of the Super Tenere.
I still ride the Dl to work a lot but I'm thinking about selling it. I just don't find the wind management sufficient enough for winter riding to work. As a matter of fact it may have the worst air management of any bike I have ridden.
I can ride the Tenere 75 miles before work when it's 24* F out and be just fine. 10 miles straight to work at 24* on the DL is torture.
The Tenere is so stable on gravel, I did things on it in that 2015 Alaska trip that would have resulted in death if I was on the DL. I have some crazy stories of that trip that I can't tell on the internet.
My wife and I rode the DL to the Ozarks before the Tenere arrived and she would never get on that bike again.
She actually rode part way home on the back of our sons bike she disliked it that much. And she has probable put on about 300, 000 miles sitting behind me.
The DL is a disaster if you hit gravel at speed, it's a street bike geometry.
Do you know the SV650 is the most used amateur day track bike in the USA. All they did different was make the DL look like an adventure bike.
One of the scary things that would happen on that 2011 Alaska trip was we rode way to fast. A loaded down DL650 frame can NOT support a load at high speed. The two DL650s would start swaying [kind of oscillating] above 95 and would go down if you didn't hold the handle bars very tight. Landon was almost petrified of his bike at high speed.

On the Dalton gravel, the roads up north can and do change from day to day, You just have to take what you get.
If you are entertaining any thought of riding to the Arctic Ocean, Don't put it off, It is just crazy how fun it is.
I so much want to ride my wife all the way up but she can't be gone from work more than 2 weeks at a time.
We are planning on it and taking our time and enjoying every second of it.

Steve

Perfect response.  Those are the details I needed to hear.  What you said matches my (limited) experience.  Wind management on the DL is a mess, albeit somewhat fixable.  I am not a fan of the suspension.  It is o.k. on road, but goes down hill from there as the road conditions worsen.  I doubt I'll put money into the suspension.  If I find that I really want to do 50/50 off-road, then I'll get another bike that matches the mission.  Before I bought the Strom, I was certain I was going to buy a BMW F700GS or F800GS.  I didn't want the weight of a liter bike, so I was looking for something in the 450lb range with 60+ hp.  Pickens were slim.  I wasn't crazy on the test ride of the Beemers, which surprised and disappointed me.  Wind management seemed worse than the Versys and Strom, as did heat management. (My subjective opinion on a couple of 15 minute test rides on a fair, 70 degree day.). The fact the dealer wouldn't honor their internet price really closed the door on those bikes for me.  The Strom (at another dealer) was cheap enough for me to afford farkles.  It fits most of the riding I do. Like you I commute.  But I know that both the bike and I have capability limitations.

From your trip report I could tell that I would have taken twice as long for the same trip.  I didn't know how fast you were travelling (except in Montana), but the daily miles exceeded what I would do on my Strom fully loaded in those conditions.

Great ride reports.  I'll read about your other trips.

May the Lord bless you and your bride and keep your whole family safe and well.

Is there anyone doing anything for 2017 yet? I would love to get together with other believers who are into ADV riding and am struggling to find anything going on in 2017. I'm in Grand Junction, CO lots of great riding very close to me but haven't yet found other Christians to ride with.

I need to ride out to AZ this Summer.  I'd love to get together and do a few days of riding/camping in CO or SE UT.  Alternatively, the eastern AZ mtns near Payson are pretty country too.

Hi Benjamin,

Well, a dozen or so guys from the V-Strom forum are meeting in Torrey, UT on June 9-11.

Here's the thread.  http://www.stromtrooper.com/events/334714-4th-annual-cache-rally-2017-june-9-11-a.html

There's a campground with a $10-/night rate for tent camping if you mention that you are with the "Cache Rally".  I've exchanged contact information with a guy that prefers dirt roads to paved.  I'll be friendly and socialize in a way that honors Christ, and excuse myself if people begin to over imbibe.  (I won't be drinking alcohol.). It is open to folks regardless of motorcycle type.  I would enjoy fellowshipping with you for a day or the weekend.

My current plan is to be in Durango on the 7th, but I could swing further north through your town.  After that, Torrey 8-10th, down to visit some folks in Vegas and Mesa Az, then east over the mountains back to the flat lands of the south east by the 19th.
