BMW r1100gs clutch job
« on: April 15, 2015, 11:43:35 pm »
So I'm working on the loathsome clutch replacement on my beemer.  So far so good, I'll include some pictures, it's been documented a thousand times on the internet so I won't try to reinvent the wheel and spare you the tutorial but everyone loves some pics and a good story!  My clutch has started slipping on my bike. It's seen what I would consider abuse for a dry clutch since I do get off road some and lately I have noticed my bike surging when under heavy load/going up hill or rolling on too hard.   I am pretty certain it's my clutch going out and I figured I'd better replace it before I'm pushing it!  I've considered repainting the bike while I have it apart but I don't know...I kinda like the battle scars.  Whatta you guys think?

Update: I got the clutch done and reassembled the bike except for the final drive.  I put it on then though, hmm, I better grease those bearings and pulled the FD back off and put some grease on the tappered needle bearings and one felt not so hot, turns out the cage was broke and a few bearings were MIA.  I ordered some new ones, I'm Kinda dissapointed I didn't get it together because I wanted to ride tomorrow but I will settle for riding the RXC lol.  Glad to have so much work done on my bike before season is in full swing.

Pics of the clutches side by side

Pics of the bike tore down to the clutch

Almost there!  Just waiting on the new bearings for my FD

😮

I just got a R1200GS.  Not looking forward to that!  How many miles did you have on it?

They can go for a very long time.  I had 60k on my bike when I did that but I off road alot too.  Off roading is hard on the dry clutch, you have to learn some tactics.  Basically you either have the clutch in or out no slipping it unless you HAVE too.  I think they can actually go up to 80k if they live a good unabused life.  The r1200 has some upgrades too over mine.  Even mine has supersceeded part numbers that improve the life (like stiffer spring plate).

Congrats on the new beemer, how many miles does it have on it?  Got any pics?

Just run it and enjoy it  ;D  looks to me like it's seen little off road if any.  It has street tires and the frame and headers look clean usually they get pretty cruddy and are hard to get clean as a bike that's been street ridden.  If you're pretty in tune with the bike you will know when it's time to replace.  You will start noticing a little slip up hills with heavy load (2 up full saddle bags) then it's time to change that puppy. Sharp lookin bike btw  i love my GS  ;)

My dad owned the bike before me, and he takes meticulous care of his bikes.  A little dirt roads, but mainly tarmac.

I'll just have to use more throttle shifting instead of clutch. ;)
