Fork Boots and Radiator Guard
« on: August 12, 2014, 11:49:49 pm »
I did a couple upgrades over the weekend getting ready for my trip to Chama, NM and Colorado.

First, I put on some fork boots.

I cut off a couple pleats and used Windex to help them slid on

Done!

Next is a radiator guard.  The expanded metal aperture dimensions are 1"x1/4" and a 1/16 to 2/32" thickness.  I found it at the local surplus metal place.

Cut it about 7"x14"

1/4" drip tubing, hope it works fine

Leftover, used as padding

Done!

We won't tell D Patrick that it cost a whopping $5!   ;D

That seriously made me laugh out loud Bill! Thanks for the much needed levity, today feels like a Monday at work.

I so wish I could accompany you on this trip -- but it would cost me too much in farkles to keep up with you  ::)

I'm curious though, what was the main reason you wanted the fork boots?

All real dirt bikes have fork boots and they look so cool!  ;D  Seriously, enough people talked enough about rock dings and bugs getting in the fork seals, that I thought I would go ahead and install a pair

Sorry it's another Monday for you.   >:(

Yeah...I remember when i wanted a bike with fork boots so bad because real dirtbikes had them...then they went to USD instead of conventional and everyone felt gravity would keep the dirt out.  -NEWS FLASH- mud is sticky and gets in the seals either way!!!  I think fork boots are actually a pretty good idea, just not usually practical on UDS because of the brake assembly/tire clearance....so we get the modernized version, the splash guard.  As for rocks etc...I have actually had a KTM that had so much scaring on the stanchions that I changed the seals and it would not hold the oil.  I micro polished them (chucked it in my drill press and polished w/ very fine sand paper) and voila! It was fixed.  So the rock chips are legit.
