Question on planning a ride
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:11:07 pm »
Is 14.5 hours and 775 miles too much for a two day ride? Seems aggressive to me but, I have the start of a really cool ride mapped out. May need to tone it back a notch to get anyone to go with me. What do you gives suggest for a ride all day/camp/ ride all day weekend?

I'd do it.  But as D Patrick can verify, I'm sick I'm the head.  It is aggressive, a lot of time in the saddle keeping the tires turning, and you may be setting up camp at dusk.  However, you and your buddies will remember the trip and not the sore butts.

Staying on back roads and small highways, 400 miles a day is still pretty easy. If you like to ride.

Yeah, straight mileage isn't too bad. But, there is 7-9 stops on the ride. I will show you the map if I can bring it up. I was thinking of a "water fall" run. There are 9 small "waterfalls" in the 800 mile circle in the flint hills area of Kansas. I thought it could make for a fun scenic ride. There are also some old iron bridges and neat little towns along the way. If I can get it planned I may just vanish for a few days.

I am currently 2k miles into a roughly 8k mile journey, no interstate, when I left Tn I was only able to travel 250 miles the first day, before barely getting to my camp ground in time to set up and cook dinner before dark, now I had 2 stops of about 30 minutes and 1 hr, plus several that were just long enough to take a pic then hope back on and go, plus a short lunch, now when I got to Texas the roads are more open and faster speeds with fewer stops but still only got about 450 a day pushing it, taking back roads takes a lot longer but definitely worth it, I would suggest running the kind of roads your planning on say a 2 hr run and see how far you get then figure in stops, but I think your being way to ambitious, just my $.02 have fun, take pics and let us know how it goes

I'm gonna concur with TnTraveler, that's a few miles for my taste.  Again, depends on the bike and the roads, but here on the East Coast with all the twists and turns, wild life in the roads, avoiding coal trucks/log trucks, off road etc.  I can do 300-350mile days comfortably but much more than that and I risk too much fatigue and I don't get to see as much because I don't have the time to burn sight seeing as I need to pound down miles.  I try to keep my trips around 250mi per day but I also usually have my dad or one of our friends with me that's not quite as gung-ho as I am.
