SW Utah 2018
« on: July 26, 2018, 06:59:02 pm »
Last week, mid-July 2018, my wife and I vacationed in SW Utah to do Zion and Bryce, and hang out a day with her friend's family on the Paiute Trail System. I also took the KTM to do some exploring.

The bike rode nicely

Paiute Trail System (my wife took these while riding with a friend in a Razor)

I remember reading ride report in 2014 and kept it in the back of my mind as a place to see.  I was going to hit it in September 2014 on my way home from Colorado, but life spurred me to make a beeline home.  Hwy 12 is fabulous, just what Dr. Butler ordered!.  At Boulder, UT, I went up Hell's Backbone road and found the famous bridge.

More shots on the backcountry byway

After skirting around a thunderstorm and only getting rained on a little, I tried to head out of the backcountry toward Escalante, UT.  On the first road out, I ran across a lightening strike and crews working to put it out, you ca see smoke coming up out of the trees.  I decided it was more prudent to take another route.

However, on my next exit path, I came to a flooded road crossing that was downstream of the thunderstorm I dodged.  I should have taken a video, but the water is a good 6-10 inches deep and rushing across.  A forestry truck had been sitting there 30 minutes waiting for it to go down.  You can see the dark brown lines of the high water mark.  It was starting to rain again, so I turned around and made great haste back up the road, and backtracked all the way to Boulder, UT.

This was a dry wash when I crossed it earlier in the day

Nice Bill! It looks like a nice trip for all.

My wife and I started our honeymoon at Zion and Bryce, then we spent two nights backpacking the Grand Canyon. The Backbone looks interesting.
